Armor penetration question

Hello again :D
My warrior, as listed in my signature, is at the armor pen 'cap', being
638*
with 2pcT9 and
NES
(according to the comments at least ;D). If this is true, what would I be gemming for now? Crit? Strength? Crit/Strength? Continue with ArP?
Thanks in advance.
*
After doing some calculations, wouldn't it be 497 rating?

Since it has been two days, I think it's safe to bump this and ask again :)

Do you have enough gem slots to hit hard cap?
If not, then go strength.

i think it depends on where you're going to go from here. your next couple gems are not going to make much difference one way or the other as far as raw dps.
however, if you plan to push for 100% passive armorpen, then just keep gemming for it. try to pick up another strong trinket that you can replace the scorpion with at some point, but for now the trinket's uptime is low enough that the extra armorpen is still getting a lot of use.
basically, by adding more armorpen, you're reducing the value of the trinket's proc. eventually, the proc will become weak enough that replacing it altogether will make sense.

First of all, work out how much armor penetration you would get from putting armor pen gems in every slot (except for the meta req) and if it gets you to 80%+ish then you should do that and replace the trinket, and keep working to hit the hard armor pen cap.
If not, keep the soft cap for armor penetration and then for the other slots gem mainly for strength while keeping an unbuffed level of at least 30 - 40% crit. You don't want to buff this too high or else overpower will have over a 100% crit chance and it will become less useful. A good way is to put crit or crit/str orange gems in yellow sockets.
If you ever switch to fury then my first paragraph still applies (get a hard arp cap if possible, if not soft cap), but gem all your other slots for crit chance. Arms benefits slightly less from crit because it doesn't rely on flurry or rampage buffs, and bleed dots are unaffected by crits.
In either case remember to plan your gemming to take advantage of the socket bonuses as much as possible. Hope this helped!
I'm going to assume you didn't look at my armory profile ;D
I have gemmed in all slots for ArP, that's exactly why I'm pressing this question.
Thanks for the useful answers, keep em comin!

well, how much AP do you have unbuffed after gemming for arp? (not´going to bother doing the math from the armory)..
ignoring armor while hitting like a wet noodle isnt good ofc.. hitting like a train but having x% of that mitigated is also not perfect..
if you can hit the hard (purely, or through softcap + trinket) and still have enough other stats, then youre fine imho..
i noticed about a 500 dps increase on saurfang when i reached the arp softcap..

Good morning Haxxer.
Yes, you're soft cap is 1,399 - 139.9 - 83.94 - 678 = 497.16
~498 rating
Because it's only the soft cap going over will still benefit you when the proc isn't up so don't start avoiding ArP now.
Now don't quote me on this but I'd guess you can go up to probably 900-1000 rating before gemming strength or replacing NES and aiming straight for the hard cap is better than ArP.
I'd look for 1-2 upgrades with hit so you can lose that trinket for something much better.
and the boot chant can be changed to greater assault unless you're a fan of the flash. I shall call you "The Blur"

just to give you some perspective on how "soft" the soft-cap is. i use the
mjolnir runestone
, which has better uptime than the NES and i rarely see more than 20% uptime over the course of a boss fight.
i'm sitting around 70% passive armorpen now, and although a strength gem is slightly better, the difference is only like 1 dps per gem so i continue gemming with
fractured
.
i'm figuring by the time i'm able to pick up a
new trinket
for my offspec, i won't need much of the proc anymore, and i won't have the expense of going back and replacing all of my reds.

Since it's rather relevant to this discussion, though not necessarily in response to the OP...I have noticed that higher-end Fury warriors, even, are starting to gem ArPen. Did I miss something?
I am also wondering, maybe I am at the point where I can start gemming ArPen? My armory is
http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Argent+Dawn&cn=Leifkales
. Now, I understand that I am wayyyy over the expertise cap. That is because just tonight I picked up
this
whereas I had previously been gemming to cap expertise.
Obviously I will be re-gemming, so I figured now would be a good time as any to figure out whether I should be re-gemming Str or ArPen.
I also picked up
The Helmet of Wrath
tonight and was planning on re-gemming and chanting that based on the information you lovely folks are willing to provide for me.
Many thanks in advance. (:

KrazyKyle4, You've got the NES which is worth 678 rating, 398 from gear, and 15 sockets, 1 of which needs to be a nightmare tear.
1,399 - 678 = 721 is NES's soft cap
721 - 398 = 325 rating from where you stand to reach the soft cap
14 * 20 = 280 if you changed all but 1 socket to fractured
325 - 280 = 45 you can get as close as 45 rating shy of the soft cap with your current gear
I'd say it'll be a good call, your gear will only improve over time
Put a nightmare tear in your helm's yellow and everything else can go to fractured if you see fit. (you'll remain over your exp cap doing so btw)

hasmel, thank you very much for your response. I am just curious, though, where 1,399 comes from?

1,399 rating = 100% ArP without any bonuses.
hard cap - trinket = soft cap
1399 - 678 = 721

If you truly want to know for sure whether to gem Arpen or Str, grab Landsoul's spreadsheet from EJ, Rawr, or SimulationCraft. Run the stat weighting, and if Arpen has a higher weight than Str, gem for it. *Usually* for Fury if you have an Arpen proc trinket (NES, MR, GT) that stat will outweigh Str when you reach around 30-35% Arpen from gear/gems, but it depends on your other stats and weapons. If you have mostly 245+ gear, you should be able to safely gem to the "soft cap" if you are using a proc trinket and that will net you the most dps. If you don't have a proc trinket, it probably isn't worth gemming for until you approach the 60%+ arpen region. If you are Arms, you can hardcap Arpen more easily, so use a proc trinket until you can surpass the "soft cap", then ditch the proc trinket and push Arpen til you are at 100%.
Most of the time Str & Arpen are fairly close, so the decision to regem for all Str or all Arpen is usually no more than a 40 dps change, unless you are near the hard cap.
I know it's a cop-out answer, but you really need to consult a predictive tool (spreadsheet, rawr, sim) if you want to know for sure.

I don't know about you guys, but Rawr seems to hate arms.
