If this is specifically for kiting the add, I'd say an unholy tank is a fantastic idea, to be honest. It has better ranged damage than a Blood DK (not sure about a frost DK) and the 6% magic resistance as well as increased AMS would be useful. However, this should only be if it's the DK's off-spec - unholy as a main spec is a bad idea for a tank on 95% of the bosses or trash in-game.

No, it wouldn't be useful for tanking Festergut or MTing Rotface.
Festergut's AoEs are easily healable or reduced through fight mechanics, Pungent Blight should be reduced to 25% with proper movement related to the spores. The AoE itself is not what kills tanks, it's when he's stacked the debuff 3x and is hitting for 35k in melee. A good portion of his damage is shadow, anyway.
Rotface's AoEs are easily avoided by moving out of it and the MT really doesn't take much damage on that fight anyway. The only big problem is the oozes (which shouldn't be near the MT) which cause the OT to take a lot of nature damage.
That is why the
off-tank
on Rotface would be better as unholy, but you'll find the MT on Festergut probably best as Frost and on Rotface as Blood, with the other being the second (unholy a distant last).

Well in that case your GM (and anyone who agrees with him) is a classist bigot. All four are viable MTs or OTs. That said, DKs and Druids do generate resources better while not being hit than a paladin or warrior, which makes more suited for the OT role. But your assumption is false that DK's can't main-tank. On non-blocked attacks, DK's actually have more passive mitigation than any other class - and with how hard bosses in ICC hit, that's actually not a bad thing.

lol all DK's are OT's in raids, the GM doesnt want to be retarded and put a dk as MT, thats wut druids and pallies are for lol ^^
Then your GM is indeed retarded. DKs (in blood spec) make awesome MTs.
imo, its like this
Blood - Self Heals
Frost - For Hard hits
Unholy - Spell damage(?)
Completely wrong.
Blood - for hard hits, highest effective health, main tanking bosses
Frost - for snap AoE aggro with HB, kind of nice when gathering adds
Unholy - reduced spell damage

Each spec is capable of tanking any realistic content but they do have their different places they excel at.
Blood = superior 1-2 target main tank and solo capabilities
Heart Strike makes for superior 1-2 target tanking
Will of the Necropolis makes for superior heavy hitting melee boss tanking
The additional stamina coefficient increases the healthpool potentially allowing one to survive an additional heavy hit
Vampiric Blood makes for a superior emergency cooldown
Death Strike, Rune Tap, Vampiric Blood, and Improved Blood Presence make for superior solo capabilities
Frost = superior add control and offtank capabilities
Howling Blast makes for superior snap aggro
Improved Frost Presence and Unbreakable Armor make for superior damage reduction on large numbers of small hits
Acclimation is superior when numerous targets may be casting 1 or more types of magic simultaneously
Hungering Cold, Chillblains, and Icy Reach make for superior crowd control
Unholy = superior mass aoe and magic intensive tank capabilities
Magic Suppression and Anti-Magic Zone make for superior magic intensive tanking
Wandering Plague, Desecration, Crypt Fever, and Ebon Plagebringer make for superior mass aoe tanking
Bone Shield makes for a superior cooldown on very large, very predictable physical or magic damage and the charges will generally last longer against a magically inclined target that stands around casting rather than autoattacks eating up charges

Personally, I tank as Unholy both as MT and OT. This is my DK:
Druum
I like it a lot for what it gives me: harder hitting diseases, good AoE threat and reduced spell damage, since most bosses carry a spell damage component alongside with the melee damage. You can mitigate melee damage with gear, but the Unholy talents can shine in some fights.
I do have a Blood tank spec as well on the same char, for those bosses that are pure melee.
Unholy is viable; skill is what makes a good tank first and foremost.

@Gryphon33,
Frost is a very good starter spec (and beyond, don't get me wrong) for DK tanks, because of it's AoE snap aggro abilities. And Frost tanks specced into Acclimation get a double whammy: nice melee attacks missing them and reduced spell damage (Acclimation procs for me everytime it's needed).
This is the Frost spec I use:
12/54/5
Back on topic: not only is Unholy viable, but also DK tanks are MTs in their guilds with all three specs. Gear helps, but skill is what defines a truly great tank.

Imo Unholy Tanks speccing AMZ shoot themselves in the foot. Exactly as Frost tanks speccing IIT. I do tank Unholy, because imo its best for fast heroics.
Also whenever i see Unholy tank specced for new gimped Unholy Blight it makes me laugh.
Zakkhar, AMZ is a mitigation talent and ITT is a melee buff talent; 2 completely different things.
As for the Unholy Blight, it was "gimped" for balance reasons with the new SS buff. However, for threat purposes it's an extra DoT ticking on the mob.; very nice.

I see what you mean; I do miss the old Unholy Blight; back in those days when it had the "flies around you" effect. AoE threat was truly epic. But since the new version is only 1 talent point, I don't mind grabbing it for a bit more threat. I only use Death Coil when (i) Rune Strike is not up, ans (ii) I have enough RP to use Rune Strike on the next GCD. I find that I still manage to keep the DoT up almost 100% of the time.
As far as AMZ, it is still 1 point as well, and I agree, it is a situational talent, but then again the Unholy tank spec can be considered a primarily magic-dealing boss tank spec; for that, it does its job effectively.

Ah, but Improved AMS is a reason I use and love the Unholy tree as a tank tree.
I'll try and figure out the TPS for the DoT; you may have a point (pun intended!).
Personally, I tend to avoid pure PvP talents. So for me, Desecration is not a choice, but I can see its uses.
And thanks for a civil conversation, Zakkhar. It's rare to be able to have a normal, decent discussion about WoW! :)
Ah, one thing I will add though: I did respec Frost for ICC last night, and I did prefer it. So I might be jumping back to Frost for my add tanking. As boring as Blood tanking is, it does excel as a boss tank spec...
