Why is lying immoral?

This has always bothered me. I know it's generally unaccepted to manipulate the truth for your own purposes, but why does that get generalized into lying is bad?
Lying is a almost surefire way to avoid conflict. Your uncle got you socks for your birthday? If you said you liked his present, it would be a lie. It would also create conflict.
I just don't see why it should be generally disregarded as bad.

it's not :S. I see major lies for your own purposes regarded as bad, but white lies to help other people are fine.
This.
And in some cases, it is actually morally correct to lie.
For example, if a person is being chased by a mad killer, you don't just say where that person is hiding.

Are you asked where the person is hiding? Btw, if you agree with me than stay for the people that want to come up with arguments, I'ma need you.
The idea is, if you went up to a random parent, and asked them if it was okay to lie, what do you think they would say?

They would instinctively say it's generally not okay to lie, I'd assume.
Lying can be vindictive and harmful. I don't deny it.
However, there are situations like outlines above where lying is actually better than being honest.
The problem is the parents would leave that last line out. I think it would confuse young minds.

Depends: If the parent was lying to spare the feelings of a child (aka "Doggie's not dead, he just ran away), would it really be that bad? But if their lying to be arseholes then no it's not okay.
But it's not immoral in any definition of the word.

I am probably going to get flamed....but I THINK religion may have played a role in the idea of lying being completely immoral.

Which would be ironic.

I snickered. It's true though...

Lying is neither good nor bad ( big lies or little ones).
Ok, now that out of the way lets talk about consequences if you are caught lying.
Big Lies= Big trouble
Little Lies= Little or no trouble
This is the reason most everyone think a small white lie is OK while a Big hairy lie is bad, its all about the consequences.

bi lies cn be bad morally.
Did he rape her? no.
Did you steal?no.
Did you forget to charge the ,anything here, you know what happens if we don,t if not tell me so I can cull the losses?no I didn't , li because if truth then he gets scolded.
Lies can be morally wrong, most of them are because they cause a benefit to self while harm to others.
I understand that they
can
be wrong, but only if used selfishly. My general question is why if you go up to a random person and you ask "Is lying bad" will they most likely say yes?
