Yep, this method is extremely solid to be using. Kudos to the finder(s).

An update for me:
This stopped working for me 6 months ago and I have had no help from Wowhead staff. I cannot say enough how disappointing it has been receiving emails from support which repeat the same things over and over! Change password, re-download the client.
Tonight we even did the suggested recreation of the realmlist file. That file was already there on my computer and replacing it didn't fix the problem.
In the end, it took my partner a couple of hours to figure out what the issue was. While my Wowhead login is my Username, the client had decided to suddenly require my ZAM email address to authenticate. This is even though, on the ZAM site, it tells you NOT to use your email address to login. Never mind when you go to login to ZAM it says 'email' but won't accept it saying 'please do not use your email address, only your username. This was never needed before and I do not know what changed on Wowhead's end to require the change. Quite frankly, I'm beyond caring.
TL;DR
If the above hasn't worked for you or you have a linked ZAM account, try using your registered email address with ZAM for the login username.
For Wowhead - It is seriously NOT the job of users to have to waste hours of their life solving this problem! I expected better :(

I'm glad you found a solution and thanks for posting it here, I'll be sure to suggest it to anyone having an issue in future.
I'm sorry you felt that you didn't get the help you needed. The last communication we had with you via email was when I passed on some advice to you from Zam accounts and since you didn't get back to me after that I thought it must have been the solution you needed. We get so many emails coming through feedback that it's not feasible for me to check back after sending an email to see if it has helped and I'm forced to go on the assumption that no news is good news. Please accept my apologies, I'll note your feedback for future.

Any more recent information on the looter not working on Macs? I thought I'd ask here, I'm currently driving the Wowhead support team crazy with my own issues.
OSX 10.8.3, most recent client (64-bit). I did the little fix with making a realmlist file. The thing is, the looter client thinks that all's well, there's just nothing to upload.
I have the +wowhead_looter (whatever it's called) folder in my addons folder, but when I do a /wl collect in game, it doesn't recognize the command.
I've deleted and reloaded the whole thing, to no avail. I'd love to contribute these data to Wowhead, it's kinda driving me nuts that I can't get the looter thing to work.
Anyone else had this flavor of the issue?

Ive tried creating the file both ways and the looter still seems to be giving me the same message. Just to be clear, should this file be created in the root directory of the worldofwarcraft application? I also get a bunch of other errors, not sure if they're relevant:

I created the realmlist.wtf file as described by
czeano
, but I still get the same error. I'm on a Macbook Air, running WoW from a flash drive. Any ideas?

Terminal worked for me. I tried creating the .wtf file with textedit and that didn't work. Terminal did. Yay! Hopefully there won't be any issues with Maverick when it comes out. OS X 10.8.4 MBP w/ retina, 16GB Ram, 2.7GHz i7, 512GB.

Okay, I had to uninstall/reinstall the game this week. I am now receiving the following message from the Wowhead Client: "This version of WoW uses an unsupported realm" - I tried to run the Terminal command above, but it won't work (says the file or directory doesn't exist).
I realize that this is probably because I have WoW installed on an external drive, in it's own folder. But I don't know how to make it see what it needs to see there.
(Also, I don't see any realmlist.wtf file anywhere in there, either).
Help?
Thanks.

Or if you want... just copy paste this into Terminal, you can find the terminal application in your /Applications/Utilities/ folder
For US:
echo "set realmlist us.logon.worldofwarcraft.com" >> /Applications/World\ of\ Warcraft/realmlist.wtf
For EU:
echo "set realmlist eu.logon.worldofwarcraft.com" >> /Applications/World\ of\ Warcraft/realmlist.wtf If you are using this fix for EU servers, leave the "[/code" out of the command

I am a year later but having the same problem not being able to use terminal since WoW is on an external drive.

Was having difficulty getting it to read the realmlist file. deleted the one I created and tried the echo terminal method, worked first time.
Turns out textedit was saving the document as a "text document", even though I set it to plain text.
The echo method just makes it a "file".
Yay for terminal commands.
Also sjam613 and anyone else on flash drives, just run the echo and then manually move the file to the flash drive. :P

I am not getting the failed auth and I have the correct realmlist in my WoW folder as it should be, yet it still says no valid realm was found? Any suggestions?
