New Wowhead Feature Preview: Comment Revamp
Return to board index
Post by
Koper
We set up a test server at
http://test.wowhead.com
where you can test out our newest feature: a revamp of the commenting system.
You can find all the changes on:
http://test.wowhead.com/blog=5/wowhead-new-commenting-system
Feel free to test on any page since the test website uses a different database and changes there won't affect the main website.
Do you like it? Do you have improvements to suggest? Feel free to
post your feedback in this thread only

I like the look Koper, and cool that we can leave reasons for why we downvote so you'll be able to see who's spamming the votes and who's trying to help clean up the clutter.

Well you'll be able to see who is trying to be helpful sure, but your not required to leave a reason why you down vote, so its not like that will show us who is spamming.
At first glance I like it Koper. I think the biggest positive change is the new rules for replying to comments. Many comments were using the "reply to first comment" loop hole to have their comment show higher.
About the green text change, comments with 10 votes or more are still showing up in green text in players profiles. Will you change this so that only stick'ed comments will show up as green in the future?
This abusive behavior is one of the many that the new system will automatically detect and undo, so random downvotes will be much less of a problem.
There was nothing about automatic detection in the changes. Are there any new automatic detection rules in place?
I like the UI look ^_^

No, as comments in user profiles are not sorted by rating so the green text is useful to identify the best comments of a user.

That's unrelated to this project although it will probably launch at the same time. We already have a beta of that system internally the problem is that there are tons of abusive users so we don't know yet how to deal with that.

Personally I like it that way as well. It's nice to be able to click on a user and then quickly see how strong their commenting is by seeing if they have green's or not.

Fair enough. Thanks for the update!
I was playing around with down voting and up voting comments to change their order, and everything looks good, reputations are updating on the test sever perfectly as well. Looks great man!

Looks good from what I can see. A few questions:
- Sometimes the up or down vote arrow is colored green (for upvote) or brown/orange (for downvote), what does that mean?
- For deleted comments, it shows who deleted it (awesome addition!), could it be possible to also add the reason that was given for the deletion?
- The sub-comment rating colors go from orange to red colorwise, the higher it's rating. It's slightly confusing as those colors are usually used negatively. Is it possible to make the comments numbers display in green?
- Is it possible to have the sub-comments ordered from highest to lowest rating, so the best sub-comments are the top and visible without having to expand? This is especially important since you can't downvote sub-comments, meaning there would be no way to get push less usefull comments off the unexpanded list.

That you voted on the comment (upvoted or downvoted, based on what arrow is colored)

This may be technically difficult to do but I think it's a good idea

No because it's important that they follow a chronological order in case there is a "back and forth". However, only up to 5 replies will be shown per comment -- if there are more than 5 the ones with the highest rating are shown.
For an example, go to: test . wowhead . com / item=34837#comments:id=237529 (it's so annoying that I can't link it as it converts it to a
www.wowhead.com
link :/). That's currently the comment with the most replies. And yes I noticed that the number of upvotes doesn't fit; I'll get that fixed.

Not sure about this. My mouse seems to hover over on the right when looking at comments. Maybe because the scrollbar is over there or something. Can this be moved over on the right?
If you do go with this though, I'm sure I'd get used to it. Maybe having to move the mouse over to the left is a good thing.
Cheers.

I agree. It's a little disorienting to have the uprate/downrate and comment rating moved to the left when I've been so used to it being on the right =)

Filter by patch is not working
tag is not working (at least in reply)
reply and deleted comment can't be seen from user page, make searching for your comment/reply a little hard

Is it only me or the subcomments with a rating greater than 100 overlap with said rating? I tried seeing
test.wowhead.com/item=41755#comments
both in Firefox and IE and the problem is present in both cases.

They can only use a subset of BBCode: bold, italics, underline plus links.

Aye, very well done Koper and co, this certainly is a vast improvement over the earlier system. Especially the reply-system feels improved to me, since it got cluttered pretty easily earlier; with this system it'll be much easier to get an overlook.
Good job!
