I have mixed feelings about this weapon.. on one hand I would greatly enjoy having a pet tentacle slap my enemies in the face, but on the other hand I'm concerned about how much a stationary tentacle will amount to on mobility-heavy fights or fights with alot of target switching.

I can't help but wonder if the tentacle pet can compare to the dps gain of a weapon like Kiril, Fury of Beasts, which has a proc that is fantastic in all situations. In addition the Tentacle will likely only provide a single target dps gain, while the stacking Agility buff from the staff provides a large single target -and- AoE dps boost.

If it was a tentacle with 2 tiny tentacle legs running around spamming Cleaves, now that would be sweet..

After spending a long time collecting both Vanquished Clutches of Yogg-Saron and Vanquished Tentacle of C'Thun, I can see my Fury Warrior having lots of fun adding this weapon into the mix =) Also noticing that the sword is not unique so being in TG spec having two of these down the line could end up in a lot of tentacles floating around >.>

This weapon drops off the LFR, Normal, and Heroic versions of "Madness of Deathwing."

The following details reflect the Normal version (403 ilevel):

Your special weapons swings have a 2% chance to spawn a stationary tentacle on the ground.

The tentacle attacks with a mind flay, channeling for 3 seconds. The mind flay ticks every 1.5 seconds for a static value of 11155 damage.

Attacks on average 8 ticks per tentacle, causing 89,240 damage or 7,214 dps.

Pros:
Looks cool, goes great with my Vanquished Tentacle of Yog-Saron.
No Internal Cooldown (ICD).
The Mind Flay spell slows. Could have some practical use in BGs.
Gives you extra burst, whether you need it or not.
The DPS gained from a tentacle is worth the secondary stats you lose.

Cons:
With no ICD, you can occasionally spawn two (or more) tentacles at the same time. Although this looks cool, only one tentacle can attack one target at a time. While the mind flay effect still occurs, the dots don't tick from the other 2 tentacles. While testing on dummys, I had 2 tentacles spawn 3 seconds apart, and recount only recorded 11 stacks for a total of 122,705 damage instead of the 178,408 I was expecting. The tentacles remained on the target I was attacking when they procced, rather than switching to another target if mind flay is already being cast on my primary target.
I'm either unlucky, or the tooltip is wrong. The proc only seems to work off special attacks. I have yet to proc one off a melee swing.
The 2% chance is too low. When fighting, I feel like I'm gaining an advantage for having it proc instead of it making up for the loss in secondary stats.

Summary: This is a good weapon if no other weapons are available. I like the idea of the on swing proc, and the tentacle does great damage, but I feel the weapon needs more work. Primarily, a higher proc rate. I'll gladly take a 5-10% chance on crit to spawn, or a 60-90 second ICD w/ a 20% proc rate, but 2% chance on "melee swing" is too little. There needs to be a fix to correct the mind flays not stacking, because if I'm fortunate enough to get 2 tentacles at the same time they better both work. This weapon compared to any other Madness of Deathwing weapons with procs falls at the bottom of the list. I will take the next immediate weapon I can get.

Got this tonight before our H-Firelands clear:

H-Beth: 26.4% uptime, 3.7k eDPS (13.5% of my damage)
H-Domo: 17% uptime, 4.4k eDPS (7.9% of my damage)
H-Aly: 10.7% uptime, 2.3k eDPS (11% of my damage)
H-Rhyo: 15% uptime, 900 eDPS (5% of my damage)
H-Bael: 17% uptime, 2.1k eDPS (6.3% of my damage)
H-Ragnaros: 19.2% uptime, 2.4k eDPS (7.3% of my damage)

Looks to be quite solid, I am happy with it.

Avg Damage Percent: 8.5%

Obviously, the accuracy isn't high given the small sample pool, but it is looking good.

Figured I'd post this here in the hopes that it helps someone.

Over a 3 hour raid on Morchok Heroic (no kills), this proc really is worth it in my opinion!

I have seen uptimes up to 16.8% so far as well, on indivual fights.

I am a ret paladin, so I don't know if it is undertuned for warriors that arent spell hitcapped.

Effective DPS: 2166.1
Burst DPS while active: 14561.7

(Both averaged over the same 3 hour raid)

Translation of tentacle proc:

"Your attacks have a 2% chance to deal 105k-120k shadow damage over 11 seconds. Multiply procs is possible. No cooldown."

p.s. Myth: "only one tentacle can attack one target at a time" - busted.
All tentacles deals damage no matter how many exists (though unconfirmed with two Gur'thalaks).

'Patch 4.3.2 Items
The most significant item change was Gurthalak, Voice of the Deeps having the proc time increased to 12 seconds from 10 seconds. This change was made to all three versions of the item.'

Blue post stating that they have hotfixed Seal of Truth so that it would NOT have a chance to proc Gurth.

There are numbers flying around currently, but it will be up to the Logs to see if this was a justifiable move for the sake of balancing the proc rate, or an unfounded one.

Either way, this is an unusual move considering the history of SoT (SoV) and proc rates for weapons/trinkets.

It's hard to describe how awesome and - simply - fun this weapon is.

However, the proc can be annoying in some situations where you need to stop DPS, and it even easily kills mobs in low level dungeons on its own which grants no reputation, loot and general no kill counts for achievements (example Zombiefest!).

I even just managed to get myself killed on a quick run for Reins of the Raven Lord, after clearing the first room with Bladestorm i got mindcontrolled by a charming totem while two tentacles were still up, which killed me in about 3 ticks. At least the question if 2 tentacles can hit the same target is answered now.

Is there something that can prevent the proc from going off? I've gone entire fights without getting a single tentacle while others in the same group get a 'normal' amount of procs. I mean bad RNG is one thing, but regularly getting 0 or 1/4 of what you're supposed to?

Anyone else payed attention to this?
I tested dsping a dummy (stood still, so did the dummy for a reason)
Then i tested a duel both me and my opponent was moving alot and it looks like it proced bit more.

Just me and my head playing a mindtrick?

This weapon keeps stealing my kills! I was farming Dampscale Basilisk Eye and sometimes the tentacles 1 shotted basilisks I was about to hit, preventing me from being able to loot them. I might just stick with my PVP weapon for 8k- hp mobs.

This weapon is so refreshing as an idea :D

Here are some clues on the working of the tentacle:

No apparent ICD, I've had occassions where 2-3 tentacles where up at one time. I was the sole wielder of the sword in the group. This occured in both single and multiple target situations.

The tentacle channels a Mind Flay, that will attack the target you were attacking the moment it procced. If you switch targets during that channeling, the tentacle will remain on that target. If the first target is killed before the mind flay is over, the tentacle will assume your current target for the remainder of its duration and so on.

There appear to be no scenarios where this would be a dps loss apart from the apparent, which is the target dying before the mind flay has run its course. The tentacle will attack on its own if you stop attacking targets, and its target range is limited only to targets that can be reached by a melee class (e.g. it will not attack mobs in flight if your character cannot reach them). Range appears to be no issue, I've had the tentacle proc on Beth'tilac during add killing on one side of the room, and the tentacle was able to attack the mobs all the way over to the other side as I switched, casting a Mind Flay across the entire area :D.

Large boss models do not appear to be an issue either, the tentacle works fine on Madness and Raggy.

It's slightly higher dmg range compared to the rest of 2handers available in Dragon Soul (e.g. Experimental Slicer) and the proc totally make up for the luck of stat ratings on the weapon. Do not be fooled, it's a definite upgrade over any other weapon available in there, even for classes that do not possess an 100% physical attack arsenal, such as Ret Pallies.

For Blood Dk's Experimental Specimen Slicer (the 2h off Yor'sahj) is better than this,

Yes this weapon has more strength (which results into Parry) and Stamina, however Experimental Specimen Slicer, has 1 more socket than this weapon (which can make up for the lack of stamina or strength), whilst the Crit can be reforged out of the weapon if needed, however extra tank dps is always nice if you can survive the current bosses you are doing and lastly the extra Mastery is LOVELY for blood dk's.

I believe that I encountered a bug with this sword while doing DS. I suspect it's related to runeforging and spec switching on my DK.

Basically, the tentacles stopped spawning for me. I did the first 6 boss fights with exactly1 tentacle per boss fight each time. Before spine, I unequipped and then reequipped the sword. The proc went up to 8-10% of my dps on both spine and madness.

Assuming there's a 2% proc chance and 600 eligible attacks per fight (melee swings and special attacks) there's about a 0.0000108% chance that you get exactly 1 spawn. To see that happen 6 times in a row is 0.000000000000000000000000000000000000000165% chance.

I'm going to start reequipping the weapon before boss fights on a regular basis.

Fury Warriors, do NOT Duel Wield Guth or equip one in your Off Hand. It only procs from weapon hits so moves such as Bloodthirst, Slam, Colossus Smash, Cleave and Heroic Strike, which all are counted as MH moves, will NOT hit with, thus not proc your off-hand. Only RB, Auto-attacks and WW will. Use Guth as you MH and ideally (given its stats) Exparimental Specimen Slicer as your OH to maximize dps.

Zealotry With the 4-set bonus of Retrubution Paladins Battleplate of Radiant Glory

The damage of the tentacle went from 11719 to 14064
