This replaced the originally announced "Shades" summon for priests.

In my opinion, it looks much cooler, but I'm a little sad that all my "Blues Brothers" related macros are worthless now ;)

It's a pity it doesn't scale with +healing as well, since this ability is a good way for any priest to regenerate mana.

Still don't understand why Shadow Mend was voted out and replaced with Vampiric Touch when we knew we would receive this pet at 66.

Shadow Mend was affected by Shadow Damage. Seemingly a 1.5sec heal by the same mana cost as a normal Flash Heal would had been a better choice for Shadow Priests (hybrids) than yet another "tick on damage" debuff.

IMO it would had been more convenient, but you who (without testing it in the first place) thought that it was a bad move by blizz - should reconsider how sick it would had been to have a heal in Shadow Form.

When in a long, mana-intensive raid fight, I take the following steps to maximize mana efficiency:

Cast one or two heals, then use inner focus as soon as a big gheal or PoH opportunity arrives.

As soon as I'm down about 2k mana from my max, I use my shadowfiend. Basically wait until I'm low enough that the shadowfiends mana gain will put me near full but won't be wasted. True the shadowfiend will restore more than 2k mana, but it comes over time so I will still be casting heals and losing mana during this time.

When I'm down about 3k from my max again, I use a mana pot.

I've found that this is a good way to get all the cooldowns ticking early on, so that I'll have the chance to use them all again before the fight ends. The difference between using cooldowns early and waiting until you are oom to use them can make a gigantic difference in how long you are able to keep healing.

And i gotta say that i had a lot of fun,
but the most fun i had was when i discovered that i could Power Infuse my shadow~friend~.
So next time i waited for spirit tap to proc, then i poped my icon of the silver crest, and then i used my shadowfiend and PI'ed it instead of me....
I got really amazing results b/c my fiend, whereas it regualry hits for about 150-180 (+1200 to all damage), was now hitting for a solid 215 and critting for 330!! thats 530-800 mana back per hit!!!
I tried again when all my CDs had refreshed, but this time i PI'ed myself and then cast my fiend (with Spirit tap/Icon) and got mediocer results compared to PI'ing my fiend.
But the really funny thing is that when i PI myself, my fiend hits for about the same, so i guess that what PI does is increase the potential of my fiend's mana leech ability, very odd.... and i will have to do some more testing...

The shadowfiend can also be affected by all damage increasing buffs, such as Bloolust/Heroism, Unleashed Rage, etc.

Some brief things about Shadowfiend, taken from Elitist Jerks:
- Attacks are melee shadow damage, using a normal melee attack table, with damage reduced based on armor of the target
- Has ~1.5second attack speed (10 times per 15 second life)
- Benefits from your +dmg with a ~65% coefficient (6.5% per hit)
- Damage added from Shadowform, Darkness, Shadow Weaving, Misery, Curse of Shadow, and Improved Shadow Bolt, and so on.
- Damage added from attack power bonuses (possibly double-dipping - the direct buff, and scaled with your stats), armor reductions on the target, and so on
- Benefits from Bloodlust/Heroism and similar buffs IF the fiend is already out when it's cast.
- Has extremely high dodge rating (in the vicinity of 75%) and significant resistances to most/all spell schools

In pvp, for priest vs priest fights like healers, its best to cast your powershield on yourself everytime they cast the shadowfiend on you. It would basically absorb the damage the shadowfiend makes to prevent the other priest from gaining mana.

The main point about shadowfiend is that:
Shadowfiend does shadow aligned melee damage and inherits a percentage of stats from the caster

Thus,

Armor reduction debuffs will affect shadowfiend's performance
Shadow/magic damage increasing debuffs on the target increase damage of the fiend
Cloak of shadows doesn't mitigate the fiend's damage
Shadow resistance will mitigate the fiend's damage (23 dps loss on the target with 70 SR in comparison with 0 SR)

Damage of the fiend comes from its attack power*:

4 AP --> +1 dps

Shadowfiend's attack power is dynamically influenced by:

.57 caster shadow dmg --> +1 AP
1 STR --> +0.53 AP

So the following buffs will help the shadowfiend:

Blessing of Kings
Blessing of Might
Strength of Earth
Wrath of Air
Battle Shout
Unleashed Rage

Other ways to increase shadowfiend damage:

Heroism will help shadow fiend dramatically, tho only if it's cast after the pet is summoned.
Spell damage from WoA totem converts directly into the shadowfiend damage per hit (i.e. 1 spelldmg ~ .65 dps)
Shadowfiend inherits a percentage of priest's attack power (40%), so Blessing of Might on the priest will help the fiend
Being Power Infused, the fiend hits 20% harder. His AP doesn't go up with PI, but his damage does.
Power Infusion doesn't affect the pet when cast on the priest

* This analysis doesnt take into account the crit% factor - its initial value, impact from agility buffs.

A tip for warriors doing arena:

A warrior's fear almost never gets resisted by the shadowfiend, so you can fear one with ease.

Seems to me to do just as well against a plate wearing pvpver as anyone else. Are hunters jealous their pets don't give them mana back for more of their special shots ?

edit: Downranked ? I know it does shadow damage, and physical armor does not stop shadow damage.

Shadowfiends are pretty dodgy and instantly appear next to the target. So when your tanks mess up on engaging Al'ar quickly enough after a Flame Quill, a quick Shadowfiend can provide Al'ar with a target in Melee Range for a few seconds and prevent a wipe. Those are my favourite Shadowfiend moments.

When you're low on mana in a fight, and fight 2 or 3 mobs, this can be a real lifesaver. Get up mana, throw some heals and/or a shield, and you're back to action. Or use it on a new mob to gain mana without drinking.

the only limitation is that it dies too quickly if gets agro =\ didn't try to shield it yet though
(normal heals work on it finely)

this spell is great, at lvl 66, it does about 130-150 damage and restore about 350 mana per hit. That is alot. With this move I rarely have to drink when grinding or questing. It's like innervate for priest.

The shadowfiend can also crit for about 280-320 and this gives back 750-850 mana. Does have quite low health but its damage is not its main purpose.

Although he only lasts 15 seconds and has a cooldown of 5 minutes, he is REALLY good. He does damage decently fast, around 1.3-1.5 attack speed I would have to say, and he does around 140-300 on his attacks. The mana regen from it, makes this skill alone worth having to every priest out there. The calculation is damage x 2.5 = mana recieved. So if he does 168 damage, you get 420 mana. Normally when he is out, you get about 3k mana. He can be hit and killed VERY easily (around 600 health I believe) so only use it on something you or someone else has the aggro of. Hope this has brought some facts about him to your mind.

All that you need to be is 66. You do not have to be shadow specced or be in shadow form to use it. One of the pet's abilities is to go into shadow form.

This spell is all around good for any spec of priest. Im holy/disc and the shadowfiend really helps me out when im in a pinch. For instance, when you are in a boss fight and you have no mana pots, just call the fiend and he (on average) restores about 3 to 4k mana for me, and has saved my party's life on numerous occasions. Great addition to the priest spell set :)

If you aggro 2 hard mobs and they take down your hp pretty quick while you waste a lot of mana trying to take em down, can you then pop shadowfiend and let him take aggro from one of them and then cast prayer of mending (instant) on him making it jump betwen you and him healing both for 4k while the fiend restore most of your mana? just a thought.

Chill out ppls. Each class compliments the others. As a Shadow priest I love warlocks. The soul stone pays off if I get killed and the group is dieing. I res from the stone with full health and manna and start healing everyone back to full and ... and... Well it rocks!

Shadow priest and Warlocks should run together. POWER TO THE SHADOW!

This guy is also VERY useful in Curator for kara. Use him while Curators Evocating, bam over 8k mana back

i was in an arena with a priest and one of these bad boys, my rogue partner swung at him 8+ times and never made contact. anyone else experiencing this? or does wow just not want my arean team to win? dodge, miss, dodge, parry, miss, miss, dodge.....

As of the current patch (don't know which), you can cast Shadowfiend on hordies in neutral cities, and the guards will pummel the horde. Also, depending on how close you are to the guards, you can avoid even going into combat. Horde take damage, you sit and laugh. Best to do it naked just in case you do get killed.

Whatever "best" group anyone might think, just having afflic lock and shadow priest pretty much means dot's dot's dot's and more dot's and never ending dot's and so forth. Just a destructive pair on it's own. I'd hate to be in PvP against a working pair of that nature....

Which reminds me, there's a video on youtube of 9 locks and a shadow priest. Not much info on the priest, but it's fun to watching the locks wiping out the allies in WSG.

by the way, you should use the shadow fiend during the evocation phase of the curator, it restores almost 100% of your mana.

As a feral druid i kill this every time holy priest use it, y waste some time but he dies in two mangles.Also if the priest is shadow specced the best thing you can do is hit the priest, if u hit de fiend you will get killed in a few seconds.

I don't know if this was answered, but is there any sort of AoE threat created when this guy is used? I got him today and siced him on a creature, and two other mobs that were fairly far away aggroed to him (and then to me) as well.

I am so in love with my shadowfiend
at lev 68 i soloed a 70 elite. popped the shadowfiend about halfway through and redotted the guy, gained back half my mana (4 out of 8k) and was able to kill him without any pots.
