There are precisely 12 of these mobs in the zone. The clusters on the map are due solely to the fact that they wander around a bit more than the average mob.

These are immune to all nature spells and effects; Shamans and Druids be mindful of this.

If you are only starting to explore Westfall, please be aware that these mobs have a HUGE pat range, and can be hard to spot if you're not paying attention. So be aware of these guys at all times if you're not around level 18 or 19. (I found these guys the hard way).

The drop rate may have been raised. I got this on my second kill today and while it took a bit of running the quest took maybe 10min

I found the largest concentration (for me at least), was between the points of 42,57 and 34,67. I found 4, got the debris on the second kill. They are VERY spread out however. You won't run into a patch of them, so don't expect it. Good note above to be on the lookout, and check out every red name you see, even on the other side of hills.

does anyone know if they still drop magic dust? i dont even know if that item still exists in the game since none of the vendors that are listed to sell it actually do. looks like an awesome item to have in pvp or for aggro control in instances

The only place I can remember the exact location of seeing one is a little north of Sentinel Hill, over the rise.

they spawn at several locations but only one per area. The areas on the map indicate that there is one (maybe 2) Devil(s) there.

i got the stuff after 3 kills so it wasn't that bad.

Not all that common but I had a quest here I had to kill these buggers, there is a good range between pop places yet not so far to drive you insane.

I originally discovered magic dust when I was doing the quest that requires "dust devil debris." (Devils in Westfall) Like most noobs, doing the Westfall quests when I was lvl 12 or so, I quickly learned to be terrified of these guys and did my best to avoid them. Then I realized just how useful the magic dust can be. It's also an amazingly valuable item for resale on AH. You almost never see them and when you do, 2G is a low price. Realistically, based on my calculations below, someone with a mount should be able to pick up at least five per hour. If you can get 3G each for them, that's not bad. And they can be easily killed by anyone level 20 or higher.

When I initially came back to farm them, after using all of them had I had collected while doing the quest, I was concerned that the magic dust had been taken out of the game. I farmed once, killed twenty or so, and did not get a single drop of anything (magic dust or otherwise). But now I've farmed several times and can promise you, magic dust is still here.

Here's my experience, and a few tips.

1. Look at the above map, it's very helpful. Within each section, you will NEVER find more than one dust devil at any given time. The area north and east of Moonbrook is actually two sections, so there are actually eleven distinct regions.

2. The respawn rate is 4-6 minutes, so if you are farming these, once you've killed in one area, move on. (One note: In my experience, one section (around 66,73) has a much longer respawn rate. Don't know why or if others have experienced the same.)

3. I farm by making a large circle, starting in the "dust plains" region of Westfall (around 66,73 if you have coords), (farthest south and east) the moving east to North of Moonbrook, going north to hit the three regions along the coast, then crossing the road, moving south to hit the two areas south of the Molson farm, then hitting the region just north of Sentinal Hill, then crossing the road to hit the region north of the dead acre then back to my starting point. Because the people questing in this region generally AVOID the dust devils like the plague, it's not uncommon for me to get all eleven in each circuit.

4. With my mount, with killing say 9-11 per circuit I can make a circuit in about ten minutes.

5. Because respawn rates do vary, (and occasionally someone else kills one) my policy is that I hit the area where one should be, and if it's not there, I immediately move on to the next, instead of hanging around.

6. Drop rates do vary, but based on my last 3-4 farming expeditions, I'd say the drop rate on magic dust for me has been a bit lower than what's listed here, closer to 10%. (I have also, interestingly, gotten 4 elemental air in about 150 kills, which is WAY higher than what is listed here. The ONLY other thing I've gotten is one Dust Bowl. In 150 kills, I've gotten 14 magic dust, 4 elemental air, 1 magic bowl, which means that 130 times out of 150 they dropped nothing. (Of course if you're doing the Devils in Westfall quest, they will drop the Dust Devil Debris as well.)

7. Just want to reiterate this is a great item. I have on a couple of occasions used one against a much higher lvl horde opponent who resisted my polymorph. Boy was he surprised. Of course, like sheeping, any damage cancels the effect, but 30 seconds is a LONG time to sleep, giving me plenty of time to run away, drink a potion, bandage, whatever you want to do. I've also been able to sheep one, dust one a couple of times, which really levels the playing field when you are a cloth-wearing mage.

Seems that they travel close to the fleshrippers and tend to roll over a hill toward me when I am weak and helpless. Then they chase me down and kill me.
Seriously, though, I see them quite often in the triangle between Sentinel Hill, Moonbrook and the Quarry. I've killed a few and had no drops, though. Had much better drops from the Gnolls, same area, who are a lot of fun to go one-on-three with. Usually...

The drop rate seems to have fallen. I'm currently at 8/84 which is 9.5%

The posted drop rate of Magic Dust is not accurate, for those in Classic planning to farm. I am currently sitting at ~5% based on my own data. Just fyi for everyone.

Edit: It has improved a bit over the past day, so more like 10%... heh.
